KERIKERI’S SURPRISE DEFEAT OF KAIKOHE
1-Special to “Northern Advocate”l KAIKOHE, This Day.
A greasy ball was the feature of Rugby games played in the Bay of Island on Saturday. At Kerikeri, the Kaikohe seniors suffered a surprise defeat, the game resulting:—Kerikeri 9, Kaikohe 3. Teams:—
Kerikeri: Miller, Strongman, Callander, Sliding, Waha, Aitken, Young, Amos, Beasley, M. Ripia, J. Ripia, Marsh, Smythe, Skipper, Pera. Kaikohe: Dargaville, Webster, Wite Hira, Epiha, Paniora, Rogers, Waro, Sadley, Tane, Harris, Te Namu, H. Whiu, Nicholas, R. Rogers, S. Pausina. Kerikeri made the pace right from the whistle. The ground was soggy, but the rain held off. Ripia missed an easy free kick for Kerikeri. Interesting play occurred when J. Ripia punted and the Kaikohe full-back fumbled. Strongman was there to score a brilliant try. Pera’s kick was wide. —Kerikeri 3, Kaikohe 0. When the referee caught the Kerikeri forwards infringing, Rogers secured a wellearned goal from just inside the halfway line from the free kick.—Kerikeri 3, Kaikohe S.
.With Kerikeri still the working side, a fine run right down-field caught Kaikohe out of position. M.
Ripia intercepted and clapped on the pace, and handed over to J. Ripia who scored. Pera’s kick missed. —Kerikeri 6, Kaikohe 3. Just before half-time, Strongman worked the blind side from a scrum near Kaikohe’s line and got over.—Kerikeri 9, Kaikohe 3. The second half saw no , further scores. By this time the rain was coming down in torrents, making play very uninteresting. Kerikeri has improved out of sight this year, largely due to the fact that the ranks are strengthened with several of last year's Ohaeawai players. Mr J. McManaway was referee. Other results; — Western zone;—Senior: Ohaeawai 12, Okaihau 0. Junior: Kaikohe 13, Teirihga 9 Green and Gold 20, Ohaeawai 0; Okaihau 23, Kerikeri 11. Eastern zone: —Senior: Otiria 15, KawakaWa 3; Oromahoe 14, Moerewa 3. Junior: Kawakawa 3, Otiria 3; Oromahoe 23, Opua 3.
