Insulated Barge

[Per Press Association. covyrigfitj AUCKLAND, Saturday. A barge built by an Auckland firm, Lowe and Son, to the order of the N.Z. Refrigerator Co. left Auckland today in tow of the motor ship Port Waikato for Wanganui to be used to convey meat from the company’s works at Imlay to liners in the Wanganui roadstead. Built of three skins of Kauri, the vessel is 70ft long with a beam of 18ft. One hold runs the full length of vessel. It has been insulated for the carriage of frozen produce. The barge is double-ended, and specially constructed for crossing the Wanganui River bar and lightering work. It has a steering wheel and rudder, but will be towed when in use. The firm will commence immediately with the construction of a sister vessel.
