Medal Match At Portland

In the medal match played on the Portland links on Saturday, A. Anderson, with a net score of 62, and Mrs E. George, with a net score of 74, were the most successful players. Other good cards returned were: — Men: J. Gillespie 63, T. Curran 65, J. Henry A. Town 69, P. Colvin 69, S Williams 69, and R. McLaren 70. Ladies: Mrs P. Colin 80, Mrs F. Boyd 81, Mrs J. Whangarei Men’s Club

During the week-end, the second round in the Mt. Denby handicap competition was played, with senior and junior medal rounds in conjunction. The junior medal was won by J. Gellert, 96, 26—70, and the senior by R. Mirrielees, 85, 14—71. Other good cards were handed in by C. B. Bevins. 78, 15—72; A. W. Adams, 92,, 26—72; F. Smith, 90, 18—72; W. H. Speer, 92, 19—73; L. Bird, 90, 16—74; H. A. Moffitt, 88, 14—74; and M. J. Lynch, 92, 18—74. j First round Hogan Cup matches played during the week resulted: —S. J. Weston beat Rolfe Smith; R. W. Smith beat W. H. Hill Rose Bowl Competition

The qualifying found of the Hill Rose Bowl with a medal round in conjunction was played last week by members of the Whangarei Ladies’ Golf Club. The medal round was won by Mrs N. F. Stead. 95, 23—72. Other good scores were:—Miss J. Mirrielees, 95, 19—76; Miss O. Radcliffe, 98, 22 76; Mrs W. J Glanville, 90, 14—76; Mrs D. Cook, 102, 23—79. Stableford Bogey at Whau Valley

A Stableford bogey match, played by members of the Whau Valley Golf Club during the week-end. was won by K. Symington, 22—11—33. Next best cards were; R. Hughes, 17—15 32; G. Palairet, 20—11—21; M. Hendricksen, 17—14—31.

Ferrier And Thompson Win N.S.W. Foursomes Title

(Received 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, May 30. Jim Ferrier and George Thompson won the foursomes championship of New South Wales at the Royal Sydney Links, with rounds of 71 and 72. The score is one under par, and a record for the event. The same pair won the event in 1933 and 1934, but did not compete in the two following years.

Sweeney Wins British Amateur Title

(Received 10 a.m.) LONDON, May 29. In the final of the British amateur golf championship at the Royal St. George’s Links, Sweeney defeated Munn, 3 and 2. The winner was recently captain of the Oxford University team. Munn, who is 50 years of age; has won seven Irish championships, and has played in first-class golf for 30 years. He has never been nearer winning the amateur championship than the semifinal. Sweeney took the lead at the first hole, and only lost it at the 23rd. Overcoming diis shakiness after this stage, he won three holes in succession. Munn, in spite of his age, made a gallant effort, but was beaten by a sounder player.
