NEW ZEALAND CRICKETERS’ TOUR

The New Zealand cricketers who are visiting Britain this year opened their tour on Saturday, when they commenced a match against Surrey. They made an auspicious start, Surrey is one of the strong cricketing connties, and the fact that New Zealanders were able to dismiss the Englishmen in the first innings for 149 runs after three hours’ play, and to reply with. 161 runs for the loss of five wic-! kets, is sufficient to justify confidence in the team. Cricket, of course, is notoriously uncertain, and there will be many ups and downs during the progress of the tour, but it is nevertheless a

matter tor gratification that so good a start has been made.. Gallich an’s spin-bowling was evidently disconcerting to the men of Surrey, for it is said to have been mainly responsible for five wickets going .down for 90 rims in two hours. The festivities and excitement of .the Coronation will no doubt overshadow .cricket for some days, blit, despite that fact, it is certain that the New Zealanders’ match against Surrey will not pass unnoticed.
