J.P.S. ACCEPT JURY LIST FOR WHANGAREI
Twelve hundred citizens of Whangarei and the surrounding districts have been accepted as good men and true.
Under the Juries Act, the police are required to produce each year a list of those qualified and liable to serve as jurors. A meeting of local justices of the peace is; then held on the, first Friday of April each year for the purpose of scrutinising the list and oi hearing objections. If a man whose name is included cn the list can satisfy the justices that he is not qualified or liable to serve, his name is struck off. '
With the creation of the Northland Supreme Court district, the first such meeting of justices was held today.
A list comprising 1200 names was submitted by the police. Only two objections were received, and, after statements had been taken, both were sustained. The revised list was then signed by two of the justices and became the jury list for the year. The same procedure will be followed next April, when the list will be further scrutinised, some names expunged and others added. A hint was given to the j urois this morning that their services may not be required during 1937 as it did not appear, owing to lack of facilities locally, that a Supreme Court session would be held in Whangarei until the; proposed new justice building was available.
