FATAL ACCIDENT AT ARAPDNI WORKS

[Special to “Northern Advocate?*! - ’ /AUCKLAND-This-Day. While working on the - building scheme at th} Arapuni Jiydfo-elegtric works last night, ,Mr Percy . Bollard, aged - 30, married, of Arapuni, came into contact with a 67,000-volt line.-Mr. Bollard received injuries which caused his death five hourslateiv.; iih The accident also cut off the power supply to Auckland, the King Country and the Waikato for 12 minutes. Mr Bollard was placing steel reinforcing rods in position at. a point where the high tension line emerges from the building. He was standing on a platform, and the rod he was carrying connected with' one 7 df the lines.

There was a sharp'explosion and a blinding- flash. Mr Bollard who fell off the platform, was severely burned, and was also suffering from (head injuries - and shock. The fact that he was standing on a wooden platform, which acted as an insulator, saved Mr Bollard from being killed outright. The injured man was taken to the Waikato Hospital, but died some hours later.
