N ' Villa Nueva was subjected to repeated intense attacks,, which appear to have taken the insurgents by surprise. They retreated' precipitately, leaving over iOO prisoners, including Italians and much’ war material. Spain, but.added that if other countries defied their undertakings, Italy could not permit one-sided intervention, r Hundreds were killed when rebel planes intensively bombed Durango. A bomb fell on a church, killing 25 women.
The market place was devastated. / A convent was blown up, killing 13 nuns, and injuring 30, also killing a Jesuit priest who was celebrating mass. ' ,■$ '
