Mr W. Betts presided over a wellattended meeting of Ararua settlers in the hall on Saturday evening. A resolution was passed protesting against the action of the Postal Department in sending out accounts for the first instalment of the new telephone system, as the new line is not yet completed. Settlers are still connected by the old association lines, and the service is so poor that fully 90 per cent, cannot make contact with the exchange, and have been unable to do so for the last three months. With a good service, settlers would not mind paying the required instalment, but they asked that the department do something for them in respect to the charges asked for.
A discussion took place on the present biweekly rural mail service, settlers considering that the district was entitled to a more frequent delivery. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr P. Stratford for his services over a number of years as director to the suppliers’ dairy factory.
