Mr F. W. Reed’s Translation Of Dumas Work Published

"News* Inis*ju^tYome*to hand that the well-known London publishing house of Hutchinsons has published “The Whalers,” which was written b3 r Alexandre Dumas. This news in itself will be welcomed by the literary world, but it has especial interest for Whangarei people by reason of the fact that it was Mr. F. W. Reed’s translation of Dumas’ book which made possible the publication of “The Whalers.”

Mr. Reed, who has made a life-long study of Dumas Pere, and who, three years ago, published the first attempt at a complete bibliography of that author, claims that this is the greatest work of the great romancer as an editor. Mr. Reed translated the wjrk from the original French, and enlisted the help of Mr. Johannes Andersen, whose knowledge of New Zealand flora and fauna, and of the early history, both Maori and pakeha, of New Zealand is wide and authoritative. Mr. Andersen has supplied copious explanatory notes. The existence of the translation came ; under the notice of Hutchinsons, who secured it. The publication of “The Whalers” is the outcome.

Mr. Reed has thus once again placed Whangarei on the literary map of the world.
