FINE DOUBLE PROGRAMME AT PLAZA
A fine holiday picture programme entertained a large house at the Plaza Theatre last night, and will be screened again tonight. It is a double feature evening composed of two fine units. “The Case of the Black Cat” is packed with thrills, &nd is a real puzzler, while “Sing Me A Love Song” is a frothy musical comedy, with laughs all the way and a sprinkling of catchy songs.
In the former picture suspicion falls on a number of people, and the case goes as far as the court, where a young man is charged with one of the murders. Ricardo Cortez, however, with the aid of the cat, proves that he is innocent, and reveals the villain.
Zasu Pitts, Hugh Herbert and James Melton are the stars of “Sing Me A Love Song.” The last-named does the singing, and does it well in five new numbers. He also plays the part of the young millionaire, who “starts at the bottom” in his own department store. Of course he uses an assumed name, and that leads to complications later, when he falls in love with one of the shop girls. Zasu Pitts and Nat Pendleton are responsible for many a laugh, but Hugh Herbert, as the millionaire kleptomaniac, takes the comedy cup.
