NEW COURT BUILDING FOR WHANGAREI
Site Away From Station Road To House Both Branches
Whangarei is shortly to have an entirely new building to house the Supreme and Magistrate’s Courts. An announcement to this effect was made by the Hon. H. G. R. Mason, Minister of Justice, prior to his departure from Auckland for Wellington yesterday. During the week-end Mr. Mason paid a short visit to Whangarei, and inspected proposed sites. The department had previously been considering proposals for additions to the existing courthouse in Railway Road. “The expenditure involved in such alterations,” Mr. Mason said, “was so considerable as to warrant the erection of a new building, and plans for the erection of a structure to house both the Supreme Court and Magistrate’s Court will shortly be drawn up.” Old Site Unsuitable. Inquiries made in Whangarei today showed that the old site in Railway Road, where the Magistrate’s Court has occupied buildings originally erected for the Railway Department is considered unsuitable in many ways. Disturbance is caused through passing trains and the surroundings generally are not good. Surveys of much more attractive sites are now being made and the data obtained will be presented to the Minister for further consideration and final selection.
