RECORDS SHATTERED AT MAUNGATAPERE

Success Of Silver Jubilee Meeting

In extending hearty congratulations to the Maungatapere Athletic Club on the brilliant success of’ its silver jubilee sports meeting yesterday, the “Northern Advocate” must be expressing the sentiments of a very wide circle.

This virile organisation has developed and expanded in remarkable manner and their 1937 effort, so impressive as it was, was truly symbolic ol that spirit of progress which has always been paramount. Yesterday's carnival attracted, a

record crowd and attained record

proportions. The gatetakings aggregated £155 8/,' which is £23 8/ up on the previous best figure.

As if to chime in to the tune ol things, the dance last night was also a grand success, over' £4i being taken at the door. It should be noted, however, that the £155 8/ handled by the gate-keepers during the day was realised on an admission charge of 1/6, whereas the previous record was achieved at a rate of 2/. The crowd had a most enjoyable day. Except for a very light shower or two, which did no harm, the day was fine but uncomfortably humid. Plenty to Interest.

There was plenty to hold the inter-

est of the spectators, but perhaps the most attractive to the general public were the cycling events, which have more of that spectacular element about them. The men awheel turned on great exhibitions and the crowd revelled in the exciting finishes. The star performer was M. Hibburt, of the Auck-

land Cycle Club. At the last Wha,j ngarei gymkhana this rider clinched a I first and second in two events, and j yesterday obtained two firsts and a | second, on each occasion starting off I the scratch mark.

The athletics, as usual, were of a

very high order. The big event of the day, the Jubilee Cup, was annexed by H. Morrell, of Hokianga, from a field of nine, who staged a great contest. The Auckland provincial 100 yards championship resulted as expected, D. M. Gordon, the popular Aucklander, who has been competing off virtual scratch at all northern meetings, leading the field past the judges. Morrell was third in this race and also second in the 100 yards handicap final. The only runner to score a double win was H. Gilmore, who succeeded in the mile and half-mile.

The outstanding axeman on the day j was A. Williams, of Ruawai, who i clinched both the big 14-inch standing | chop and also the 12-inch. His was a sterling performance and his success as a 'stake-earner was well deserved. Splendid Organisation. The programme, despite its comprehensive nature, was well conducted and went off without a hitch. It was a tribute to the organisation and a great advertisement for co-operation which is a keynote in the success attained by the Maungatapere Athletic Club. The president, Mr J. G. Draper, secretary, Mr F. O. Armstrong, executive members and the many willing helpers are deserving of every praise for their endeavours in the interests of ( their club, and, at the same time, their patrons.
