Whangarei Breeder Wins Malcolmson Cup

PIGEON RACING

The Whangarei Homing Pigeon Club held a young bird race from Te Awamutu during the weex-end. They were liberated at 9 a.m. on Good Friday to face the worst day yet experienced in the young bird programme. it was raining very hard in the Auckland district and blowing a strong head wind. No birds got home the first day. The second day dawned worse than the first, and small hopes were entertained of any birds getting home. However, at 2.44 p.m., E. Gilbey’s bch Tommy reached home, looking very tired after the hard flight. About an hour later the others started to arrive. This gives E. Gilbey a substantial lead in the young bird average, also the com- | bined average.

In connection with the New Zealand young bird derby, word has been received that the Whangarei club put up the fastest velocity, and W. Griffiths (who headed the list of the local club’s race) will receive the Malcolmson Cup, a much-sought-after trophy in New Zealand.

This is the first time the Whangarei club has flown in a federation race, so it may well be proud of its achievement in placing Whangarei properly on the map in regard to pigeon racing.
