Boy’s Distress Signals Hoax
I Special to "Northern Advocate.”! AUCKLAND, This Day. During the height . of the northeasterly gale on Saturday night, distress signals, which seemed to be showing from a position on the seaward side of Tiri Tiri Island, were seen by guests at the Waiwera Hotel.
A long-distance telephone call .was put through to the Auckland Harbour Board officials, and preparations were made for the despatch of one of the board’s powerful tugs.,.
Then it was discovered that the distress signals were being flashed from the wharf by a boy. Owing to the heavy rain, spray and mist, it was impossible to judge the position of the light from the shore, but when the proprietor of the hotel saw the light from the second "floor, he could tell
that it was only a short distance out to sea. By the time the hoax had been discovered, a number of Auckland Harbour Board men had been called out.
