IN THE SOUTH OF FRANCE, Forthcoming tournaments in the south, of France indicate strong entries and keen competition among women players on the courts where Mile. Lenglen for so long predominated. ■ Senorita Lizana, playing under conditions more closely resembling her native Chile than any she has yet ex r perienced in Europe, will undoubtedly be a formidable contestant for the chief prizes. Against her will be ranged Mme. Mathieu, Mile. Jedrzejowska, champion of Miss K. Stammers, Miss Hardwick, Miss A. M. Yorke, Miss Betty Nuthall, Miss Nancy Lyle, and probably Mrs Sperling. Disappointment. When one considers the opportunities given to English players to gain experience in France, Germany, Belgium—all Europe, in fact, and the U.S.A.—it makes the performances of Australian women players highly creditable (states a Sydney paper).
Also it adds to the feeling, of disappointment that possibly neither Miss Joan Hartigan, Miss Thdlma "Coyne, nor Miss Nancy Wynne will be seen at Coronation Wimbledon, despite the offer of the English’ L.T.A. to donate £250 towards the expenses of the team. The feeling ■rnr-EhgraMd atill Jremains that the Australian L.T.A. might be prevailed upon to alter their decision, despite the international competition which may be instituted in 1938, and which is given as the reason for the definite cancellation of any oversea plans for Australian women this year. . i
