S.P.C.A. CONTEST

For instance, Norma Carter, Maud Price, and Hilda Webb all received 35 marks, so having an equal claim to a Girls’ Own Annual. Only one thing could be donet-and that was to compare their marks for No. 1 in the second test, the only compulsory question. For this Norma had been credited with four marks against two in the case of both other competitors, and so 'was awarded the honour. “It seems apparent to me,” said the S.P.C.A. officer who acted as co-judge with Kupe, “that a great many children did not read the rules properly. For example some did not complete five questions, whilst others wrote answers to all seven.” We had no alternative but to disqualify these entries. ■ In fairness to all competitors, this was course of action left open to us. “I am sure,” this gentleman continned, “that the results have been : moist satisfactory and that the members of my society will be very pleased not only with the number of entries received but also with the high standard of the work contributed.” Young Northlanders, he said, had certainly demonstrated their approval of the treat Kupe had suggested, and_ he whispered secrets about the possibility of more contests in the future. Special Prize-Giving. In connection with this competition, the S.P.C.A. has decided to present the prizes at a social gathering to which, it is expected, even country prizewinners will be able to be present. The date for this function has not yet been fixed, but due notice will be given to the lucky young Northlanders concerned. At present a Girls’ Own Annual is not .obtainable, though orie is'on order end should come to hand in'the very hear future.
