World’s Record Thresher Shark
A world’s record thresher shark was caught yesterday by Mr H. H. Dowding, of England, when fishing off Cape Brett.
During the two and a half hours terrific struggle, the Alma G., the launch from which he was operating, was towed two or three miles out to sea, but the fish was eventually landed under the shadow of Cape Brett. Being such a huge specimen, it was found necessary to bring it to Bussell to be weighed and an excited crowd on the wharf watched with interest the strenuous efforts to pull the monster up. Eventually, the fish was hoisted by crane and when weighed turned the scales at 9221b5. Mrs L. R. Hamilton, of Hawera on Saturday, caught two striped marlins weighing 255 and 2571bs respectively from the launch Minerva. Mr Hamilton landed a mako of 2781b5. Both Mr and Mrs Hamilton, who have had their headquarters at Deep Water Cove, left for home today much impressed with their experiences.
