Hall Of Commerce Suggestion
A suggestion made by Mr D. L. Ross at last night’s meeting of the Whangarei Chamber of Commerce that a hall of commerce was needed in Whangarei, is to be investigated, and a committee comprising Messrs Ross, J. Tudehope and C. Waymouth was appointed to examine the question. Mr Ross said that, as a chamber, they were homeless and had no central point in the town which they could call their home. The same applied to various other organisations which were carrying out'valuable work for the community, and they mainly held meetings in places at the charity of such bodies which owned suitable meeting places. He suggested that the chamber should have a hall of commerce, a point at which all organisations could meet under the wing of the chamber, and as of right. Offices for the secretary and president and executive could be provided, with a meeting room and smaller rooms for other organisations, He considered that such a project could be made self-support-ing.
Such a building would be a rallying point for their enthusiasm. They were really only the pioneers of a town such as Whangarei, and it was their duty to build wisely and well on behalf of the whole community.
