ALTERATIONS TO TOWN BASIN
BANK TO BE CUT AWAY NEAR
BRIDGE
Now that the new Victoria Bridge is fully completed, improvements being effected in its precincts will not only add to its stately appearance but also to that of this part of the Hatea, Primarily for the purpose of diverting the flow of the river and so assisting in the maintenance of deep water in the Town Wharf Basin, the Harbour Board has put into effect work which will keep its grab drfeclge engaged for about a month. The abutments, which for so, many years have been the foundation of the approaches to the old bridge, are to be removed, but on the Onerahi side the job is to be extended. It is proposed to eliminate the present cruising club jetty and to cut the bank away in a straight line from the end of the bridge to the last jetty, which will now be that at which the trading launches Rakanui and Eva berth.
The Cruising Club, which intends building its new pavilion further along the waterfront will have its jetty in front of this site.
The grab dredge has commenced work on the Onerahi side and large quantities of big stones have been removed from the vicinity of the bank. Sufficient dredging will be done to ensure a depth of six feet at low water right along the new face.
