HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF
CRICKET TEST COMMENT
ENGLAND’S FINE ACHIEVEMENT
(Received 3.30 p.m.f SYDNEY, December 9. Commenting on the test, the “Sydney Morning Herald’s” cricket writer states: — “History repeated itself. In the first test, played at Brisbane in December, 1928, Australia was caught on a raindamaged wicket in the second innings and was dismissed for 66 runs, and Marylebone won by a margin of 6V5 runs. England has won all three tests played in Brisbane, the second in 1932-33 by six wickets. England and Australia are now level in wins, 53 each. Bradman, for the second time in a test against England, failed to score.” C. G. Macartney, in the “Herald,” remarks: “England deserved victory, but it was regrettable that rain should have affected the wicket. In any case, Australia’s task was too formidable. It is a matter for astonishment that, on a rain-affected wicket, the Australians were mown down without Verity even handling the ball.
. “The batsmen, apart from Oldfield and Chipperfield, were overawed by the conditions, which were hot so bad as one might think from the total, although, bad enough to prevent the match from being fought to a conclusion on equal terms. If ordinary form had been shown during the- first half of the match, Australia might not have had to worry about rain to the same extent.
.. “The English victory is an achievement of which®Allen and his men can be proud. Struggling to find their form right up to the beginning of the test, tWy emerged with honour in every department.
“The Englishmen were a good combination. The Australians were not a combination all through.”
