REVENUE FROM DUCHY OF CORNWALL
(Received 2 p.m.) LONDON, December 10
As the new Civil List will be one of the earliest considerations to be faced, it may be recalled that one of King Edward VIII’s greatest sources of revenue was the Duchy of Cornwall. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr Neville Chamberlain, is introducing a Civil List of £410,000.
It may be explained that, as the King was unmarried and there is no Prince of Wales, His Majesty desired that, so long as the position was unaltered, the Duchy’s revenues should be placed at the disposal of the State, relieving the Civil List to the extent of £104,000. ’ In accordance with the wish, £25,000 additional from the Consolidated Fund was made available to the Duke of York while he remained heir-pre-sumptive, the King intimating his desire to meet this sum from the Duchy’s revenues, devoting the balance,p/ £79,000, to requirements of his Privy Purse. The Civil List provision for the Privy Purse was £IIO,OOO. but His Majesty intimated that he would provide his own Privy Purse from the Duchy so that, unless the Duchy’s revenue fell below £102,000, the Civil List grants of £IIO,OOO would remain undrawn.
