“This is a lesson to us that, in future, we. should have major works done by contract,” said Cr J. Morrison, when t6e Whangarei County Council today were discussing the engineer’s report on Tikipunga Deviation. Mr Norris said that the original estimate, for the section within the borough was £495, and the actual cost hid: amounted to £615, making £l2O beyond the estimate. Outside the borough, the original estimate was £621, i amendments by the Highways Board by about £25. The tender for the section outside the borough was £635, but no further grant was made by the highways board. Up to date, £628 had been spent outside the borough, and about £l7 would be required to complete. Cr Morrison: Does the expenditure of £615 for the work inside the borough include the subsidy paid by the Unemployment Board? The engineer: No. That would be about £ 2 -per man per week. The subsidy was available for formation only, not metalling. The £615 is the actual cost to the borough and county councils.”
Cr Morrison: “We thought it would be a good idea to let the borough council do the work, and thus lift the unemployment subsidy, but I think . from the figures supplied today, that the job could have been done more cheaply by, straight-out contract.
