MRS PEERS-ADAMS PASSES

The death occurred at Thornton’s Bay, Puru, Thames, yesterday, of Mrs Ellen Hardwick Peers-Adams, a very old identity of the Maungatapere and Maungakaramea districts. Born in England 76 years ago, deceased, when a young girl, accompanied her parents to New Zealand. They were among the earliest settlers at Maungatapere, . where she met and married Mr Leslie Peers-Adams, a member of a distinguished English family, who was school teaching in the district. Later Mr Peers-Adams retired from the scholastic profession to engage in farming in Maungakaramea, where for over 30 years his wife and himself were highly respected residents.

Some 14 years ago they took up residence in Thames. Mr Peers-Adams died three years ago when on a visit to members of the family in the Whangarei district. Mrs Peers-Adams was brought up in the Quaker tradition. She was a most accomplished lady, singing and playing the piano particularly well. With her husband she was a regular attender and supporter df the Maungakaramea Anglican Church in its early days. Their home was a most hospitable one, and ministers and other visitors made it their headquarters at ’Karamea. A family of six sons and six daughters remain. They are: Messrs W. H. Peers-Adams (Masterton), Alec (Maungakaramea). Maxwell and Leslie (Waimatenui), Richard (Takapuna) and Newsham (Puru, Thames), Misses Josephine (Thames) and Beatrice (Mt. Eden, Auckland), and Mesdames H. P. Hayward and Alice Sutherland (Otorohanga), and R. Macken (Otaika, Whangarei), and A. Hill. Three sons and a daughter served in the Great War.

Mr Charles Hardwick, the only other member of the Maungakaramea family, resides at Morningside Road, Whangarei.
