DRAINAGE AND WATERWORKS

BOROUGH ENGINEER’S REPORT

The works committee reported to the Whangarei Borough Council last night that it has considered the following repoi’t from the borough engineer:

“The expenditure on both drainage and waterworks for the current year is well within the estimated expenditure, and, without any risk of overexpenditure, certain capital works can be undertaken. The sewerage scheme is severely overloaded by the infiltration of ground water into the sewerage pipes, and I am of opinion that with the sum which we have available the best value for the I neney can be obtained in attempting |to diminish this infiltration.

“Accordingly, I recommend that T be authorised to spend up to £3OO in this manner. In the waterworks account the rate of expenditure can also be increased, but investigation work is still in progress at Maunu reservoir and, at the present time, I am unable to stat'e what remedial works will cost. However, while there is an element of doubt as to what money is available, certain capital works can be undertaken, arid, .while replacement of present mains is desirable, it is also necessary that, for a full and complete investigation of the present waterwork system, additional valves and equipments be purchased.

“From a preliminary study of the waterworks reticulation, it seems that any further service reservoir can be jplaced at a higher level than the Whau Valley reservoir, thus increasing the pressure throughout the borough and affording relief to some areas, which at present are badly served. It is for more definite information that the equipment is desired, and it should be mentioned that it is not required only for this study but will become an integral part of the reticulation system.

“There is, however, one pressing main replacement in Rurumpki Road and I recommend that the following expenditure be authorised: —(a) Rurumoki Road, replace -J-insi main with 2-inch for distance of seven chains, estimated cost £45; (b) purchase of 12-inch loaded equilibrium ' valve, portable pressure recorder, portable water level recorder, pressure gauge, approximate cost £l7o.’’ The committee recommended the adoption of the report and the council agreed to this.
