CALF CLUB COLUMN

There’s quite a. lot of news in this week’s Calf Club Column — judging dates, championship parade fixtures and answers to correspendents. But the ordinary article is missing. We’ve had a serious time together in the past few months, and although I know how much you like preparing your, calves for the show, I think a holiday wouldn’t do any of you any harm. All work and no play, they say, makes Jack a dull boy, so this week, instead of experts collaborating to give you advice on calf-rearing problems, they’ve pooled their resources, to give you a laugh. This year is the last time that New Zealand boys, and girls will be asked to sit for a proficiency examination, andmainly for the amusement of Calf Club members an “In Memoriam” Proficiency Paper has been prepared.. There’s no end of fun hidden away in the mock examination paper printed elsewhere on this page, and so we can share our laughs as well as our work.

On Monday next the Kaikohe Group championships are to be held. I hear there’s a good time in store for the Club members of this district. Who are holding sports in conjunction with the parade. I’m hoping very hard that I’ll be able to attend, though, if I do, I’ll, have to try and take along better weather than accompanied me to Waimate.

There’s another important piece of news I have for Kaikche boys and girls. I understand that there was some misunderstanding about junior classes in Native Schools attending the parade, but lam able to say that they will definitely be able to attend. This morning Mr Dennehy advised me that he had received a telegram from the Education Department reading;—“Whole holiday granted to all Native Schools concerned.” And so, yon see, there’s no doubt about the matter now.

I hope Calf Club members have their Scrap Books in good order. It’s drawing close to closing date now—just twelve more days. At Headquarters we’re looking forward to scores of entries, and no doubt many young Northlanders are looking forward to collecting one -of the magnificent prizes the “Advocate” offers for the best books prepared. _
