WHANGAREI Y.W.C.A.
PAST YEAR REVIEWED
There was a fair attendance at the annual meeting of the Whangarei Y.W.C.A., Mrs J. N. McCarroll presiding. In her annual report, the secretary, Mrs H. M. Foster, said that despite many difficulties, they were fortunate in being able to record satisfactory progress.
“Lack of suitable accommodation, and the services of a permanent secretary, have militated against the development aimed at by the Y.W.C.A.,” the report said. “Fortunately, we have now been successful in obtaining the services of Miss A. Bennett, prominently connected with Y.W.C.A. work in Wellington, as permanent secretary, and this appointment will be of great assistance to the Y.W.C.A. in the ensuing year. Miss Ben-
nett will commence her duties as from March 1, 1937. Public Support Wanted.
“There is a definite place for Y.W.C.A. work and that, under the circumstances, we have made progress during this last year is gratifying. Our operations, however, can only succeed to the extent of the public support received, and I would like to suggest that greater efforts be made in the directions of obtaining larger support for the coming yeaxv in an increased membership and forms of social entertainment.
“During the year the Activities Committee was successful in holding a very enjoyable dance, which also assisted the funds. More functions of this nature could be undertaken and would, I am sure, be very popular. “During the year, Miss Stevenson, National Board Secretary, arrived in Whangarei on two days’ visit, her object being to obtain an insight into the difficulties and problems of the Whangarei branch, and it was Miss Stevenson’s suggestion that we obtain Miss A. Bennett as our secretary next year. “There have been five resignations, Mrs Wilson, Mrs Reid, on account of ill-health, and Mrs Jack, Mrs Hills and Mrs Johnson, who have left Whangarei to live in Auckland. New members on the board are Mrs Hayman and Mrs Patterson. Round Table Club. “The Round table Club has been a very successful unit of the Y.W.C.A. this year, and is to be congratulated on its healthy state. “Thanks are due to all those who have aided us in any way during the year, to our honorary advisory board, and solicitors, and to the board itself for the unfailing loyalty and support. We would particularly thank our president, Mrs McCarroll, for her hard work, guidance and unfailing tact, and also our treasurer. Miss McLeod. “With the appointment of a permanent secretai’y, we have every encouragement to go forward during the coming year and anticipate with confidence a satisfactory report at our next, annual general meeting.” Financial Position. The treasurer’s report showed that there had been a profit of £4B 19/10, compared with a loss of about £6 for
the previous year 1 . Practically every item in the expenditure amount shows a reduction on last year’s figures. A further payment of £37 7/ has been received from the Brown’s estate legacy.
The Business and Professional Women’s Round Table Club report showed that at present there were 14 active members, and 14 meetings were held during 1936. At the beginning of the year the club lost its president. Miss K. Barr, but gained Miss Bain. President Re-elected. The president, commenting upon the financial report, said that the credit was better than expected. Public appeals for monetary assistance had not been made, but a membership campaign was necessary. Two years ago the membership was nearly double what it was today, and, considering that the subscription was only 5/, many should be ready to assist. The retiring president, Mrs J. N. McCarroll, was unanimously re-elect-ed to the position and Mrs Fry was. ■also elected to the board. Afternoon tea was served, and Mrs Fry sang several songs.
