AUCKLAND STOCK EXCHANGE

QUIET CLOSE, TO WEEK

[Special to “Northern Advocate ”G AUCKLAND, This Day.

After a busy period the week on the Auckland Stock Exchange closed quietly, only three sales, all reported, being put through at this morning’s call. The outstanding change was the sharp drop of 30/ in WoolwoFthg (N.Z.), as compared with the last sale only three days ago. Buyers had anticipated a bonus, and the anouncement of the company disappointed these hopes. Following the transfer, the market settled between £6 2/6 and £6 10/. The scrip of the parent Woolworth concerns reflected this weakness, and was available at 6/ lower than yesterday, after buyers had quoted the reduced figure at £7 3/6.

Among industrials, the chief point of note was a reduction of 6d in sellers’ quotes for Pukemiro Coals, which failed to interest buyers; an advance of £1 17/9 in offers for Dominion Breweries; inquiries at £1 18/- for N.Z Newspapers; and a fairly firm demand for a few Australian issues, particularly Morts Dock and Burns Philp. Australian Glass were easier, and there was a subdued tone in Broken Hills and British Tobaccos. Banks and insurances showed frequent blanks in buying quotations. Timber shares were also dull. In the mining section there was a further hardening in sellers of Mataki Junctions. Government bonds and stock attracted little attention, except for the tax-free issues, which were gll in request, but with only one seller at £lO2 10/ for tlfb 1989-43 March issue.
