DETECTIVE’S JUMP ON TO SPEEDING CAR

YOUTHS ARRESTED FOR ALLEGED ’ CONVERSION

ISpectal to • " Northern. Advocate.”l AUCKLAND, This Day. * A sensational motor car chase, involving the police night patrol car and a stolen car took place at Onehunga at 12.30 this morning. Two or three youths in a converted car were caught after Detective Whitehead had jumped from the running board of the patrol to the other, when both were travelling at a fast speed.

When Detective Whitehead called upon the driver of the other car to stop, it accelerated and Whitebead got on to the running board and jumped for the speeding runaway. In doing so he slipped, and was jammed for a moment between the two cars, suffering bruises.

When the stolen car was compelled to stop two of the youths jumped out and ran away. Detective Whitehead stayed with the driver, while two constables chased the other youths, who jumped a fence and cleared a stone embankment. One youth ran into the sea, where he was caught in water up to the neck, a third youth escaped, but was located later. The youths were found to be under 17 years of age and will appear in the Children’s Court later. Detective Whitehead is an athletic type of officer, who two years ago had a desperate struggle with a criminal on the roof top of a city building. On that occasion the man sought by the detectives drew a revolver, which jammed when the man attempted to discharge it.
