FESTIVITIES AT MOEREWA

On the evening of November 18, the dance hall at Moerewfi was the scene of a happy gathering, the occasion being the celebration of the fifth birthday of the Moerewa Women’s Institute. Invitations issued by members were restricted to one guest each, besides members of their own household, while members of the neighbouring Institutes and the Kawakawa branch of the W.D.F.U. were also invited. The

president, Mrs Cotterill, welcomed the visitors. Every moment was occupied ! with community singing, competitions, dancing and games, in which all'took part till supper time, when an adjournment was made to the old hall adjoining, where a centre table, decorated with flowers, was filled with 'a variety of good things provided by the members. Taking pride of place was the handsome birthday cdke, made, iced and tastefully decorated by Mrs B. Crtooks, bearing the Moerewa Institute emblem (a spray of geraniums) and five candles which were duly extinguished by Mesdames Kelly and Sommerville, who, with Mrs A. Corr, are the only Institute members who were present at the inaugural meeting five years ago. Mrs Corr being unavoidably absent, the cake was cut by Mrs Cotterill. Mrs Cooper (Taumarere Institute), Mrs Tunnicliff (Orauta Native Institute) and Mrs Wyatt (Kawakawa branch Women’s Division) returned thanks for the pleasant evening and wished the Moerewa Women’s Institute success and many ■ happy birthdays. An apology for absence was received from Maromaku Institute, owirlg to sickness in the district. Competitions resulted as follows:—■ Ten articles used in kitchen: Ladies, Mrs Tubbs; men, Mr Harvey; tennis terms, Mrs Crooks; card (throwing, Mrs Millard (Taumarere); fishing, Mrs Jordan (ladies), Mr Harvey (men). In the potato relay race, the A Company was successful, and the peg relay race was won by B Company. These items provided much amusement. Several ladies rendered music for the various items, and the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” ended a most enjoyable evening.
