POLITICAL SITUATION IN SAMOA
[Per Press Association. — Copyright .] WELLINGTON, This Day. The correspondent of the United Press Association at Apia wrote on October 15 that since the election of the new Faipule (native parliament), of which 34 out of the 39 are members of the Mau all kinds of wild rumours and beach yarns have been heard. Members of the old Faipule who had still about *lB months of their term to run decided to retire, as they considered it would be hopeless to try and work with the new members who are aiming at Samoan selfgovernment. The people are far from being united. A move to make Mr O. F. Nelson a Faatonu created a tense situation, and the Prime Minister’s reply to the recent remit of the Faipule gave relief in certain quarters. A meeting is being held to form a Country Party, and behind this movement are the cocoa planters and the majority of the European community, who are apprehensive regarding the supply of labour ( shculd Samoan control be conceded. Reports of a new Samoan organisation are persistent and the position is difficult owing to several factions being in the field.
