“HIT AND RUN” MOTORIST KILLS CYCLIST
ISvecial to “Northern Advocate "I AUCKLAND, This Day.
To be knocked down by a passing motorist who did not stop, severely injured and conveyed to hospital where he died 2§ hours after the accident, was the fate of a Tauwhare motorcyclist, Mr. John Crump Willard Carlisle, aged 21, on Saturday evening.
He was on the Great South Road. Auckland, at 7 o’clock when he met his death.
A few minutes before, a fasttravelling car heading southward through Papatoetoe, hit a traffic officer’s vehicle, who gave chase, but lost the culprit in the heavy volume of traffic.
Just after 7 o’clock, Mr. J. N. Kingston, of Homai, was talking to Mr. Carlisle, who was making adjustments to his cycle at the side of the road near Takanini. Mr. Carlisle had completed the minor repairs and was sitting on
the saddle about to use the kick starter when the motor car, travelling at speed, struck the stationary cycle and threw its rider heavily to the road. The car continued on its way.
The injured man, after being treated by Dr. W. G. Lock, of Papakura, was taken by ambulance to the Auckland Hospital. Mr. Kingston gave to the police the following description of the car: Dark blue sedain, fairly old model, believed to have wooden spokes in its wheels, a dark-coloured large truckbox on the rear. The car probably will have a damaged left front or rear mudguard, where it struck the motor cycle, and it is believed it will show signs also on its side where it came in contact with Mr. Jones’ car.
