THE TYRE-BOWLERS.

I The big crowd in town last night enjoyed the novel opening to Whangarei’s carnival week-end. Cameron Street was thronged with 'late-night shoppers when the tyre-bowlers lined' up between the Bank of New Zealand and the National Bank. So quick off the mark was G. Carrington that the winner, with only halt the distance gOne, had almost overhauled the official car which had gone ahead to pilot a way through the crowds. With the vehicle acting as a pacer for the speedy runner and his dexterously controlled tyre, and while such men as Walter Preston, the noted track athlete, became enmeshed in the crush of volleying tyres and flashing legs—a few competitors actually bit the bitumen—Carrington continued on his unchallenged way. He won easing up by five yards from the fast-finishing F. M. Power. - . W. Beetson was third and L. Graham fourth.
