CUTLASS GOES OUT OF SERVICE

(Received 10 a.m.) LONDON, October 23

One of the Navy’s most historic weapons and most effectively used before and after Nelson’s days in boarding enemy ships disappears with the abolition of the cutlass, which a fleet order announces no longer forms part of the equipment of men landed for service, and will be employed only on ceremonial parades or at funerals. Only 20 cutlasses will be carried on vessels with complements of over 500, and 10 when the complement is unde 500. They will not be carried on small craft.
