AUSTRALIA TO FOLLOW N.Z. LEAD

l United Press Association. —By Electric i Telegraph. — Copyright .] (Received 2.30 p.m.) This Day.

Following the announcement from New Zealand of the introduction of legislation to protect British shipping against foreign competition, it is announced that legislation with a similar object will be introduced in the Federal Parliament soon.

Sir Archdale Parkhill, Minister of Defence, states that details of Australia’s proposal for the protection of trans-Tasman shipping will be supplied to the House later. Although the New Zealand Act will provide measures to be taken by Order-in-Council, different procedure would be prescribed in the Australian legislation.

The Canberra correspondent of the “Sun” reports that he questioned the Federal Attorney-General, Mr R. G. Menzies, about a report from London that restrictions were imminent against foreign shipping between Australia and New Zealand. Mr Menzies said the Commonwealth Government was awaiting a report from the Imperial Shipping Committee, which recently inquired into the whole question of Pacific shipping. That report has now been drafted.
