Far Northern Fire. Fire on Wednesday totally destroyed the home of Mr T. Greaves, Parapara, in the Far North. Nothing was saved. Destroying Weeds. The Whangarei County Council decided yesterday to have a trial with a flame thrower, as a means of destroying growth which blocked water tables on the sides of roads. Closure to Trawlers. Support to representations being made by the Whangarei Chamber of Commerce for the closure of Bream Bay to trawlers and seine net fishers, was forthcoming yesterday from the Whangarei County Council, Dairy Stock Sought. Urged To Join Union.

At a meeting of employed and unemployed workers held in Whangarei last night, the following resolution was carried: “That this meeting of workers urge upon all workers to join the respective unions to which their trade or calling entitles them, in respect of the LC. and A. Amendment Act. Any worker who is in doubt is advised to join the N.Z.W.U.” The meeting was adjourned pending the return of the Hon. F! Lark, which is expected in about ten days time. Pataua-Whareora Road, v A suggestion that the P.W.D. scheme for widening and straightening Pa-taua-Whareora be extended to form and metal an additional mile at the far end of the road, was advanced by Gr. A. Clarke at the meeting of the Whangarei County Council yesterday. Gr. Clarke said that this would give access to two good settlers, and would be an important district improvement. He understood that the proposed expenditure was to be confined to the existing roadline. Cr. Clarke will interview the district engineer, representing the desirability of extending the road.

Whananaki Bridge Proposal. Reporting to the Whangarei County Council yesterday on the meeting with the Minister of Public Works, when assistance was sought to the construction of a bridge connecting Whananaki North and South, Mr J. A. S. Mac Kay, the chairman, said the Hon. R. Semple appeared to be impressed with the proposal., Cr. J. Morrison said that the construction of a bridge would immediately relieve the children, who ha<t to ford and row across the river, and would ultimately form an important ‘ link on the coastal roadi On the motion of Cr. B, Martin, it was decided to convey the thanks of the council to the settlers, Europeans and Natives, for their offer of generous contributions. The settlers would make available £SO in cash and free labour amounting to a similar sum.

New Working Conditions. “Under the new conditions of shorter hours and higher pay, we cannot employ men economically, unless they are working really well, and at full capacity without losing any time,” commented the county chairman, Mr J. A. S. Mac Kay yesterday. The county clerk said that careful attention would require to be paid to the provisions of the suggested new awards. For instance, it was claimed that men using their own bicycles riding to and from work should receive an allowance of 2d per mile. Bridge carpenters were to be paid £6 for a week of 40. hours, and, in the event of them dropping their tools into the river, the local body would be ' held responsible for replacement. The chairman: “A convenient way of replacing old tools.” The county engineer, Mr J. Norris, said that a large number of bridges in the county required repairing, principal of the works being the re-decking of the Titoki bridge.

Musical Comedy Frolic Revue. Whangarei audiences may look forward in pleasanlt anticipation to a bright and entertaining performance in “Variety Spice,” a musical comedy frolic revue to be staged in the Town Hall for two nights, Tuesday and Wednesday, July 21 and 22. The show, which is-being presented by the Whangarei Orphans’ Club, and produced by Fred Argyle and Rae Williams, promises to provide a riot of mirth, music, song and dancing. The producers have been fortunate in assembling the right class of talent, which augurs well for the revue receiving popular public approval. In another portion of this issue, the complete programme is published in order that the merits of the production may be fairly judged by the theatre-going section of the public. 813
