NORTHERN SPORTS

WAIPU DEFEATS UNITED. Waipu secured another winf on, Saturday, when they defeated United by 9 points to nil in a particularly hard game. The light United forwards put up a wonderful showing against their burly opponents, which was evidenced by the fact that the first spell ended with no score, and twenty minutes of the second elapsed before Waipu opened their account. United won the toss. Waipu kicked off and went straight to the attack and took play into United’s twenty-five, where P. Connell marked a short kick in front of the' goal, but the kick failed. Norwood, picking out of the scrum, gave United temporary relief, but the Waipu forwards swept down again right on to United’s goalline, where lan McCarroll cleared. United now took a hand, and invaded Waipu territory, and got right to the Waipu line. Play worked back to halfway, where Waipu backs took a hand, and a score seemed certain, but Finlayson failed to hold the ball. From a free kick, Waipu had a try at goal, but Hudspith secured, and made a good run, putting United on the attack. Webster secured in midfield and made a determined run down the line, but was thrown out at the corner. From the line-out, lan McCarroll intercepted a pass, and sent on to D. McCarroll, who got to Waipu’s twenty-five before he was caught. An exchange of kicks followed, with no side getting any advantage, and so the spell ended. Waipu opened the second spell with a hurricane rush, and went right to the United line, but they were driven back to half-way, where play settled for quite a while, when Waipu broke away and went over, but were brought back for a scrum on the line, where Norwood secured and dived over for the first score, after 60 minutes’ play. The kick failed. Just after the kickoff, the Waipu backs took a hand, and only sound tackling stopped another score. The heavy Waipu forwards took the ball over, but Burke forced. From the drop-out play was in midfield .when Connell secured, and nearly all the Waipu backs handled in a very nice run, for D. Finlayson to finish off in the comer. Shortly after, the Waipu backs got away again, and Webster looked a winner, but a very spectacular tackle by Burke settled him. United looked dangerouss when; from a good opening made by K. Bridle, who sent on to D. McCarroll, the latter went out at the corner flag. Waipu cleared, and from a high kick, their forwards followed fast and went over for Maloney to score the third try. The kick failed. Play had settled in midfield when the game ended. Mr McLean was referee.
