COMPLIMENTARY DINNER

OLD BOYS TEAM ENTERTAINED Following the ten-a-side Rugby competition on Saturday, the winning team —Old Boys—together with officials of the Rugby Union and the referees who officiated during the afternoon were entertained to dinper by , Mr N. Wilde, of the Settlers’ Hotel.

The toasts honoured were: “Old Boys Club,” proposed by Mr D. L. Ross—responded to by Mr G. Burns; “The Runners-Up,” Mr T. Stewart— Mr S. Alison, captain of the Kia Toa team; “The Referees,” Mr J. Doel—Mr L, G. Miller; “The Host and Hostess,” Mr L. Morgan—Mr N. Wilde; “The Press,” Mr J. O’Shea—“Northern Advocate” representative; “The Chairman,”- Mr D. L. Ross—Mr T. Stewart. Reference to the highly entertaining football being played by the two allMaori teams in the competition—Kia Toa and Pipiwai—was made by Mr Stewart. Speaking of Kia Toa, he remarked that the team deserved better results for the class of football they were playing. Their lead in opening up play had been followed by other clubs. In proposing the toast of the host, Mr L. Morgan characterised Mr Wilde as a good sport and a keen supporter of Rugby. His lavish entertainment in such comfortable surroundings was greatly appreciated by Rugby men. Mr t). L, Ross spoke in highly eulogistic terms dt the services given by such men as Mr Stewart in the administration of local Rugby. Their self-sacrifice in the cause of the national game and those who played it Were assisting to build still better things.
