BASKETBALL MAKES A START
RESULTS OF OPENING SERIES The opening of the Whangarei Basketball Competitions took place on Saturday at the High School courts. The vice-president of the association, Mr Jack Tudehope, introduced the Mayor, Mr W. Jones, who put the first ball through the hoops, to the cheers of a large company of young ladies and their friends. In his address to the young people. Mr Jones outlined what was meant by* being a good sportswoman, and expressed the need for the. girls always to remember to be good losers, as well as good winners, and never to forget that it was- their duty to do honour to the town of Whangrirei. The season opened with, Seventeen senior teams, and, although the weather was unfavourable, the girls were particularly keen tb get into the game. The following are the results:A Grade: Bargain Store B 3, Lacey Sisters 2; Old Girls A 6, City 3; Bikurangi 6, Old Girls B 3; Bargain Store A 4, Muriphenua 4. B Grade: McKenzies Ltd. 5, Ramblers 5; Lupton House 18, Bargain Store C 4; High School G 11, Poroti 2. Mi’s Eric Collins arid Misses Lawes, Munro and Parker were the referees.
