INTO THEIR SWING
WHAU VALLEY GOLFERS OPEN SEASON Everything favoured the Whau Valley Golf Club for its opening on Saturday. A cool breeze tempered a bright autumn sun, and the many members and visitors who took part in the play were given a notable opportunity of commencing the new season well.
In extending a welcome and expressing hopes for another successful season, the president, Mr H. A. Moffitt, especially thanked the Cricket Association for the use of their mower for cutting the fairways, those who had assisted in working bees over the past three weeks, improving certain holes, adding bunkers, and generally making the links more interesting and better to play upon; the old committee for carrying on over the off season, and keeping in view the new developmental scheme which had now been embarked upon; and the landlord, Mr Walter Wakelin, for his generous offer designed to make the game more enjoyable for members of the club. The lady president, Mrs J. A. S. MacKay drove the first ball. The mixed foursome, in which about 200 took part, was won by A. Jack and Mrs Lynch, whose handicap was ten, and who returned the exceptionally good net score of 30.
