FIFTY-MILE PUSH
CYCLE RACE WON BY CHRISTIE The longest and most keenly contested cycle race the Whangarei Club has held took place on Saturday, when 14 starters pushed their way to Waipu and back, a distance of over 50 miles. Handicap and championship competitions were conducted in conjunction and the. winner of both was A. Christie. The competitors left at intervals of three minutes after drawing for places.
The championship race resulted as follows:—A. Christie, 2hrs 36min, 1; T. Clark, 2hrs 41min, 2; L. North, 2hrs 41min 45secs, 3. The handicap result was:—A. Christie (8m) 1, L. North (9m) 2, H. McMaster (8m) 3.
Also started:—J. Humphries, P. Reynolds, T. Beeston, W. Beeston, A. Buckland, A. Salmon, Buckley, _S. Foot, Anderson and Redwood.
The winner’s time is considered to be very fast, and, as well as being an achievement of which he can be proud, it carries with .it the Carton Championship Cup, which may be held for one year, and a blue ribbon. The handicap race is also a trophy event.
