The school picnic was held in Mr Albert Maria’s property last Thursday, and was a splendid success. The programme, which followed the usual arrangement, was in the capable hands of Mr Allan Garton, the secretary of the committee, and Mr Hilford, headmaster. The children thoroughly enjoyed the outing, and much was provided for their entertainment. A plague of caterpillars is now being experienced in this locality, and pastures in some of the well-known farms are being seriously interfered with, causing damage and checking growth for several weeks. The pest is confined to the lower part of the valley and so far has not reached Peria. A similar visitation was encountered last year.
