RUAKAKA

The weather is still somewhat er-ratic,-with .storms, strong winds and heavy ,showers of.rain. Feed'is keeping up wonderfully well, and the milk supply has dropped only a little so' fax'. On most, farms - vegetables are lesfs plentiful . thqn usual, pumpkins being rather scarce. ■ The* • local roads have ,lately been touched up by the county grader, leaving them very rough. • ■ The draining of the Ruakaka Swamp is proceeding apace, and loud explosions can be heard at intervals in the vicinity, due to the blasting of the huge timber which bars progress. *

The carpenters are very busy in the district at present. The new junction store and residence are near completion, Mr Hewlett’s residence on his homestead farm is gradually taking shape, and a concrete garage ' has been built alongside. Mr Joe Antunovich is building a new residence by the riverside at the Deviation, while Mr W./Graham contemplates erecting a new residence on his beach section.

Road accidents seem very numerous, in spite of our first-class highway. A motorist returning home to Ruakaka late one night recently came upon an overturned van soon after leaving Whangarei, and spent an hour helping to right the vehicle to enable ’the driver to proceed on his way to Auckland. Miss Waima Austin has left to spend a few weeks’ holiday with relatives at Rawene and Kaikohe. Mrs; C. Chapman is paying a visit to her daughter at Kawakawa. Mrs McEwen, of One Tree Point, is seriously ill, and has been taken to a private hospital in Auckland. Her daughter, Mrs Smith, accompanied her, and is staying in' town to be near her.

Mrs Brian Wilson is still in Whangarei Public Hospital, where she is slowly recovering frpm two severe operations;, ( Mr Latimer has gone to Whangarei to obtain medical*'aid. The local school children are to be congratulated on winning so many prizes at the Waipu Show last Friday.
