THREE MEN KILLED

PRISON ESCAPEES SHOOT IT OUT (Received 10 a.m.) NEW YORK, March 6. Wargen Eugene Reilly, of South Dakota State Prison at Souix Falls, and two others were killed in a daring attempted prison ‘ brealc by two long-term convicts today. A pr-ison guard was critically wounded and several other guards and by-standers suffered more or less seriously from bullet wounds.

The escaping convicts, Phil Ray, who was serving 30 years for bank robbery, and Harold Carrier, serving 16 years for larceny, held up the guards with revolvers smuggled in by Carrier’s brother. Taking Reilly as a hostage they commandeered a motor car and were some two miles from the prison when they were overtaken by three carloads of guards and police. In’ the terrific revolver battle which ensued Reilly and Ray were killed, and a rancher who happened to be in the district was also killed by a stray bullet. Carrier was captured, and was returned to prison.
