CHURCH V. STATE

GERMAN CONFLICT RENEWED (Received 1 p.m.) BERLIN, February XL The conflict between the Church and the State is again coming into the foreground. Secret police struck another blow at the Roman Catholic youth movement organisations and arrested Monsignor Volker, president, also about 50 other important officials. It is believed the arrests reflect the Nazi impatience at the compromise with the Church on the youth question, and are regarded as a step toward the suppression of all lay Catholic activity.

Two of the largest churches in Munich were crowded to hear Cardinal Faulhaber denounce the anti-Catholic tendencies of the Nazies and the unChristian influence brought to bear on youthful members of the party. The sermon was relayed from the church in which the Cardinal preached. Thousands waited to see the Cardinal and ex-Crown Prince Rupprecht, of Bavaria, arrive. The streets were impassable. Isolated individuals attempting to shout “Heil Hitler” were quickly suppressed. /
