What Government Envisages
MORE SPORT IN THE COUNTRY
Labour Government stands for five days’ work and two days’ recreation, feeling that by following that policy, and with the use of machinery and modern facilities, the earlier drudgery of mankind can be decreased.
The Hon. W. E. Parry, Minister of Internal Affairs, made this statement to a deputation from the Rotorua Racing Club, which waited on him yesterday with an application for an extra permit.
“It seem,” the Minister said, “that you have a good case for an extra permit, hut, of course, you know vhat there is a maximum number of racing days allotted by law, and the way these are allocated is recommended by the Racing Conference on whose recommendation it is usual for the Minister to act.
“I am not going to argue about the rights or wrongs of that, as that is tiie uscal procedure, but ‘t docs appear as if Rotorua has been unfortunate in not securing the recommendation of the conference,”
The Minister pointed out that there, were clubs in other parts of the country anxious to improve their position and provide modern facilities. He felt that the day was coming when there would be a move for more racing in New Zealand, and that that move would come from the people.
People Must Earn More,
“The turnover of the totalisator depends on the -income of the people,” continued the Minister, “and the Government feels that it must first place legislation on the Statute Book which will enable the people to earn more.” He believed that where possible every encouragement should be given hunt clubs, so as to engender a sporting spirit amongst the farming community, and cater for those people in isolated districts.
If farmers were anxious to keep their sons in the country, sport must be encouraged in the country districts, and this was a way in which the Government could provide encouragerhent, otherwise the young people of the country would drift to the cities for work.
