BRITAIN AND PACIFIC SHIPPING
(Received 3 p.m.) LONDON, Februai’y 6.
Mr Walter Runciman, President of the Board of Trade, in the House of Commons, informed Mr S. Storey (Conservative—Sunderland) that he : was unable to add to his statement of December 17 in relation to British trans-Pacific shipping services, when he said that the British Government was awaiting definite proposals from the Australian and New Zealand Governments.
Mr Storey; “Can you give an assurance that Britain will give a lead to those two governments?” Mr Runciman: “I don’t know what action they will take, so I can’t give any undertaking.” Sir Percy Harris (Liberal, Bethnall Green): “Are you aware that it is vital to retain the services and will Britain be represented at any conference in Australia or New Zealand?”
Mr Runciman: “I cannot promise regarding a conference there, but we are always prepared to discuss the matter here.”
