r Special to “Northern Advocate.”] AUCKLAND, This Day.
A Gypsy Moth aeroplane was wrecked near the Mangere aerodrome at 7 o'clock this morning, a young pilot. Jack R. Butcher, having a miraculous escape from injury. He is a club pupil, and has only recently flown solo. He attended this morning prior to an examination for an A grade certificate. When nearing the ’drome he shut off the engine, and commenced a series of turns prior to landihg. His. turns Were apparently too steep for his altitude, and, on realising that he was in difficulties, he started the engine again. The machine nose-dived, hit the ground head first, and overturned in the paddock. The pilot, who was strapped to the cockpit, escaped with a slight abrasion to his head.
The propeller was smashed, the fuselage wrecked, and the wings damaged. • The plane has been used by the club for seven years and has flown for 2500 hours.
