TREES LITTERED EVERYWHERE

At Springfield, or Mangapai South, trees are lying in all directions, as though mown down. All creeks rose with amazing rapidity and the valley was flooded in short time. In roads the binding was washed out, leaving only the raw foundation. In face of the terrific gale a haystack was transferred right across the Waipu highway. In one house the sleeping occupants of a room were rudely awakened by the branch of a tree being precipitated through a window.
