KAITAIA

THE KING’S FUNERAL, A number of people gathered in front of the Kaitaia Post Office on Tuesday at 10.45 a.m. to take their part in the solemnities associated with the funeral of the late King. Over 30 ex-Service men paraded, under the president of the Mangonui R.S.A., Mr Don Rutledge. The two minutes’ silence was observed, and Bugler Hansen sounded the “Last Post” and “The Reveille.” The town bell was tolled at intervals of one minute for 70 minutes, while above the Post Office the N§w Zealand ensign, fully extended by a gentle breeze, served as a reminder of the unity , and greatness of the Empire, with its far-flung Dominions, over which the late King had reigned. All shops were closed for the ceremony, and some business people did not open their doors all day. Special services were conducted in the Anglican churches at Kaitaia and Awanui by the Rev. Blackwood Moore, the former in the morhing and the latter in the afternoon.
