DARGAVILLE DROWNING
YOUTH GETS CRAMP AFTER BOAT CAPSIZES [Special to “Northern Advocate.’’] DARGAVILLE, This Day. Leonard Sydney Lawrence, aged 19, eldest son of Mr and Mrs L. Lawrence, of Parore Street, Dargaville, was drowned yesterday afternoon as the result of a flatbottomed £oat capsizing ih the Northern Wairoa River. About 4 o’clock Lawrence, with a younger brother, Thomas, a cousin, Ronald Sydney Martin, of 67 Wanganui Avenue, Auckland, and a small boy, Edward Robinson, set out from the town wharf to test a home-made boat. Thomas Lawrence endeavoured to change seats with his brother, who was rowing, when about 50 yards from the shore. ,The boat tipped and sank almost immediately. The four occupants of the boat struck out for the shore, but Leonard Lawi'ence, who was a poor swimmer, was overcome by cramp. His companions went to his assistance, and managed to take him to within a few yards of the shore, when they lost their hold and he disappeared. They were unable to locate him. Dragging operations were commenced immediately, but at a late hour last night they proved unsuccessful.
